Alicia Heneghan

Alicia Heneghan began teaching in San Mateo, CA and had a passion for language arts instruction from the beginning of her career. After being a classroom teacher for several years, she was selected to be the Lead Literacy Coach for the Noyce Foundation’s Every Child a Reader and Writer Initiative.

Alicia worked with teachers to plan lessons, taught alongside them in their classrooms, and provided extensive professional development to teachers, teacher leaders, principals and district administrators. She developed units of study and had the opportunity to teach that curriculum to the teachers she supported. Alicia also developed writing rubrics with a team of coaches based on the NCEE national standards. She received a Masters in Educational Leadership from U.C. Berkeley, with a focus on equitable education in urban schools.

As the principal of Beresford Elementary School in San Mateo, CA, Alicia was able to provide instructional leadership to her staff in reading and writing workshop supporting students who are English Learners and who are socio-economically disadvantaged.

Alicia currently works for the San Mateo-Foster City School District as the Administrator for Transitional Kindergarten, where she is able to support teachers working with the youngest learners. At home, Alicia is busy keeping up with her 3 young children, Andrew, Ellie and Julia, and her husband, Kevin.
