The real world is rich, fascinating and compelling. As teachers we nurture students' curiosity and encourage them to explore the world via literacy. This workshop is specifically designed to provide teachers with the skills they need to help students turn final drafts into picture books. We will begin the day identifying characteristics of picture books, first noticing and then charting our discoveries. With this foundation, we will study some of the following elements in greater depth: illustrations, page breaks, dedication page, copyright information and about the author blurbs. Activities will be hands-on. Participants will get the chance to experiment with different art mediums and techniques as they make decisions as to how much text to place on each page. All year long we’ve explored the writing process. Now we are turning our attention to the myriad of possibilities for published pieces that reflect that process. Participants either need to bring their own published piece of writing (done as a piece use to model instruction with the students) or their writer’s notebook.
